View Full Version : My take on WoW (Phase 2 Beta)..

So i finaly got WoW to work.
I logged into a server EU 14 normal server, made a Elf Hunter, and well the first 3hrs were just bimbling about, trying to learn the controlls and what not.
But i have to say that it was quite easy to learn, i then started to pick up on the xp grinding. Myself have never been much of a fan of the current systems that you have in EQ/SWG etc. So in other words i didnt put much hope into the WoW system. But i have to say that i was amazed on how it worked out. Since you dont sitt about in one place like in SWG, you basically do quests to get your xp. Witch makes it a lot more fun, since you move around (mind you, i do know that you gain XP when hunting in SWG/EQ too). Anyhow, i somehow feel that WoW system will workout just fine.
So about after +8hrs of WoWing :D I have to say that i am amazed on how good it is. Even though it has levling like the other games. I do also belive that this game has a good potential for roleplaying too. Just need to gather each and everyone on the same server.
I will try the PvP side tomorrow and see how that works out. :7

There are unfortunately quite some tidbits of WoW that work against the roleplaying atmosphere.
One of them is no overhead text display. Not something that bothers everybody, but I remember meetings with Custodes Fati in DAoC, where it looked like a bunch of speechless folk sitting around with everything going on in the reduced chat window in the corner.
I have no idea why blizzard didn't invent some form of overhead text display. Diablo2 had it, heh. DId you try putting ! before text? Maybe it works the same as in D2, hehehe.
Then there's the level limitations. Unfortunately level based games limit those who can play together. In Ultima Online even the biggest noob was welcome to tag along on the Hythloth excursion and land a striking punch here and there.
But it's great to hear you like WoW. That's good enough for me. I'll be in at release. Hope to see you there.

P.S.
Rumours have been going around that Ultima Online will receive a major revamp this year. Just in case you're still hoping...

Ug ug Thorin,
I agree with the text bubble thing in terms of RP, but I think I've played enough non-floaty text games now for it not to bother me as much as it once did.
The level thing is also another issue, however WoW is a fast leveling game, it's not designed to be a grind-athon in the same way EQ et al are. I think given a couple of months we'll all be level60 anyway. Then you're in much more a UO situation where people were multi GMs and you played to have fun.
As an example it took me perhaps a 1/4 of the time to reach lvl 17 in WoW than it did in EQ2. Not that I powergamed in either.
As elvy says all the quests mean leveling isn't quite the same grind early on, and later on it seems that as long as your in 10lvls or so from others then you can probably co-operate.
There has been nothing I've seen to confirm the existance of an offical RP server in Europe, something to consider.
I certainly have plans for an Human Mage and an Orcish Rogue and want to PvP. The endgame of WoW is certainly PvP oriented and whats more the PvP that I've done is fun!

Hehe Ultima Online doesnt need a revamp it needs a revert :D
my UO dreamserver
* No Trammel
* RoT skillgain system as on Siege
* One Character / Account
* No Statloss
* Siege Perilous economy system
* No Blessed items (except some cloth/sandals maybe)
* Ofcourse no Powerscrolls and Artifacts, pre AoS system (Pub15)
* House Costumization (one of the new features that is good)
I would choose that (with the lovely 2D client) over any of the
new mmorpg's with pretty colors and lots of polygons :)
So.. see you all on a WoW PvP server soon :p

Good, then I can kill you :9
But seriously, prepare for mayhem on a PVP shard.
It is ganking all over the place atm on US servers, at times I cannot do anything all evening because of that.
Being killed by level 55 to 60's when I am 26( my new char) is no fun at all.
Been playing for for months now on US so if you need some info I might be able to help

Browsing the US Forums does give one cause for worry it has to be said.
But then thats why I want a horde char on a PvP server and an alliance char on a PvE server (or vice-versa).

I did that also but it aint the most optimal solution because of the trade skills on a char.
I found it much easier to have two chars on the same server because in WoW you can mail your stuff to your other chars.
So lets say you make a char with alchemy and herb gathering and another one with two other skill you can then supply the second char with potions and the first can supply your main with whatever he/she can make or find.
Trust me when I say that this is the best solution in money saving ways.

I'm sure it is the best way in money making and stuff.
However I'll stick to my plan I think, I would rather mix playstyles and side in the war than worry about such optimisations.

One of the resons it would be fun to try gather alot of the Europa community on one PvP(or PvE) server. I mean, i dont do much of the PvP on Europa, but those times i've taken part, i had fun. I and have quite good respect for those that does it on Europa (except for the arty whores :9 )
So if the majority of the PvPers (that will play WoW) would join the same server, im pretty sure that things WILL be better on the European servers. I've seen hit happen in so many games :) Eg. Lots of people who used to play Planetside says that Werner is VERY nice server, due to the people who play there. Same things goes for Eurpoa.
Now mind you though, if i join the PvP server, i wont drop the roleplaying, i will open up the Andune section for WoW too :) Roleplayers who PvP are teh win.. Along with the Elves ofcourse :7

All RP servers in the US are PVE ones, PVP RP servers do not excist.

>Roleplaying can BE done on a PvP server :7
Ive allready seen some roleplaying in the beta, i met an nightelf in a forest, he was IC the moment i met him, was very cool.. Alot of people will roleplay when they see someone else doing it, but WoW needs an increase of people who mostly are IC most of the time, then good things will come out of it.
And for the no "chat bubbles" thingy.. I agree, but you get used to it, and your player actually uses "body language" when you type something in the buffer, thats cool and it ads to the atmosphere, and theres plenty of emotes you can use and macro them toghether with good results.
Well, my take on the WoW beta is that i like it ALOT. I havent gotten to the PvP part yet, im only a level 12 Warrior at the moment. But i like the quest system. I love the atmosphere, if we can get a community like the one Deepwater was then we will have fun for years, no doubt.
The atmosphere cannot be beaten, i see very much potential in it if we can round up alot of players that think like we do, if we could transfer the glory days of Deepwater to World Of Warcraft then you never would leave your house/computer, Real Life would cease to exist ;-)
Regards.
